Abstract
For our Collaborative Research Project, Danielle McCleery and I decided to do it on Whole Foods and their meat. We wanted to know what the big deal was about their meat and their products. Neither of us had ever been to Whole Foods before so we were really interested in going and learning about their products. As researcher participants, we began with a journey to Whole Foods. We were in awe when we arrived. We went right to the meat department where we were pleasantly greeted by the head butcher. Just looking around we were able to understand why people bought their food there. Signs of organic and grass fed beef were everywhere. There was the 5 step rating system everywhere you looked and pamphlets for customers to read. We were able to ask the butcher many questions and get a lot of great knowledge from him. We wanted to know more about the rating system and he had our answers. After visiting Whole Foods we wanted to know more about the supermarkets we shop at (or shopped at!) We made separate trips and found out that those butchers could not really tell us where their meat came from! Doing our own research, we came to the conclusion that the meat from these supermarkets most likely came from factory farming where the animals well-being and lives are not concerns of the “farmers”.
